K.K. Fong / Xpress

Innovation, Overreach and Reinvention

Xpress grew from a modest printing business into a leader in time-sensitive financial printing. Its dot-com diversification shows how a strong core can be weakened by expansion outside a durable competitive advantage.

The journey

Decisions compound over time.

Each turning point changed the company’s options. Read the sequence, not just the outcome.

1986
Stage 01

Building the core

Fong Kah Kuen founded Xpress and built a strong position in financial-report printing through speed, technology, service and execution.

1999
Stage 02

The dot-com bet

The listed company became i-One.Net International and pursued internet kiosks and related ventures as the dot-com boom accelerated.

2001–13
Stage 03

Debt, exit and comeback

The diversification failed as technology moved quickly. The group accumulated more than S$80 million of debt, Fong resigned, later returned in 2006, refocused on printing and restored profitability by FY2013.

2014–24
Stage 04

Governance and disclosure lessons

SGX later issued a warning over delayed disclosure of winding-up applications. Separate criminal disclosure charges filed in 2023 were withdrawn, and Fong was granted a discharge amounting to an acquittal on 29 August 2024.

The iPivot angle

What founders should notice.

Not every lesson is about fundraising. Capital only works when the operating model, governance and strategic choices support it.

01

Protect the core

Innovation is most valuable when it strengthens a real competitive advantage rather than distracting from it.

02

Diversify with discipline

A fashionable market is not automatically a strategically coherent market.

03

Debt reduces options

Large losses and leverage can turn a strategic mistake into an existential problem.

04

Disclosure is strategic

For listed companies, timely disclosure and governance are part of value creation, not merely compliance.
