The journey

Decisions compound over time.

Each turning point changed the company’s options. Read the sequence, not just the outcome.

1979
Stage 01

Build the core

R Sim Trading was established in 1979, beginning with trading and distribution before evolving into the OSIM wellness brand.

2000
Stage 02

List on SGX

OSIM listed on the Singapore Exchange in 2000 and expanded rapidly across Asia with a focus on innovative wellness products.

2005–09
Stage 03

Brookstone setback

OSIM led a consortium to acquire US retailer Brookstone in 2005. The investment became a major setback, culminating in a S$77.31 million write-off in 2009.

2010–14
Stage 04

Recovery

OSIM refocused on its core brand and Asian business, returned to profitability and rebuilt shareholder value through the recovery cycle.

2016 onward
Stage 05

Privatise and build V3

Ron Sim privatised OSIM in 2016 after 16 years on SGX. V3 Group was established in 2017 and later expanded a broader portfolio that includes OSIM and investments or partnerships in TWG Tea and Bacha Coffee.

The iPivot angle

What founders should notice.

Not every lesson is about fundraising. Capital only works when the operating model, governance and strategic choices support it.

01

Build for cycles

A strong product and brand can create a platform for recovery after a major setback.

02

Stay close to core strengths

Overseas acquisitions can destroy value when they take a company too far from what it understands best.

03

Manage the balance sheet

Market cycles expose both strategic mistakes and financial fragility.

04

Turn setbacks into platforms

A painful failure can sharpen strategy and become the foundation for a stronger second act.
